Web Applications
Until recently there has tended to be a clear distinction between a web site and a software application, however with modern web programming languages such as PHP the line between desktop and web applications has started to merge.
Web applications are ideal where databases are involved that need to be accessed by a number of people on different sites and even in different countries. They can be run over the internet or on an intranet.
We have now given up trying to decide what can and cannot be run as a web application, recent applications have run conveyancing systems, written wills, controlled international shipping systems, notified election results and run call centres as well as the more e-commerce shops and job sites.
Web applications have the benefit of simple training (just use a web browser), no multiple licensing costs and 24/7 access from anywhere in the world as well as any updates are instant for all users.
Other important factors are the ease and reduced costs of application development and updates allowing companies to have their systems constantly modified as their business develops.
With reduced desktop software can also come a reduction in IT staff costs as everything is run on one server where staff cannot effect the program.
Options for sales reps and other staff to work from home as well as managers being able to monitor their business while out of the office provide extra benefits. Because the data is online it also allows for customer only areas so your clients can see data and reports that are relevant to them in real time saving your staff from creating and sending reports.
Security systems can be built to monitor which staff have rights to view and edit various sections of the system allowing you total flexibility on the way you work.
